Babywearing Voices: Maritza Gomez
Oct 14, 2024Maritza’s journey into the world of babywearing began in 2015 when she was working as a nanny for a six-week-old and his two-and-a-half-year-old brother. "I always wanted to babywear, but I never had the opportunity," she recalls. After trying a carrier that didn’t work, she went to a babywearing group and found a new passion that would soon become a thriving career.
Her initial struggles sparked a commitment to learning and teaching. This dedication led her to take the CBWS Foundations in Babywearing Education training.
"I didn’t feel confident teaching at first... I didn’t want to teach wrong or say the wrong thing, and someone gets hurt because of it," Maritza shares.
Despite initial reservations, Maritza found the online course incredibly beneficial.
"Joanna describes it all so well, like how it should feel on your body. It gave me the words to teach people, ‘You want to feel in sync with your child.'"
This confidence led Maritza to expand her services. She began offering workshops specifically for nannies, recognizing a unique need in her community. "I felt out of place at babywearing meetings, surrounded by parents. I didn’t want to be like, ‘Let me borrow your baby,’" she laughs.
Her commitment to inclusivity is evident in her efforts to provide services in Spanish. "There’s a big need for translating services or education in Spanish. I want to provide access and visibility," she explains.
Maritza’s approach is not just about teaching techniques; it’s about building confidence and fostering collaboration.
"Every baby is different... My goal is to ensure parents feel confident and can advocate for their child, whether I’m there or not," she emphasizes.
Looking to the future, Maritza hopes to offer workshops for postpartum doulas, helping them integrate babywearing into their practice. "Doulas need to feel confident with how they’re going to use carriers at a client’s home," she says.
Maritza’s journey from a curious nanny to a sought-after consultant is a testament to her dedication and passion. Through Ritza Cares, she supports parents and caregivers, creating a legacy of compassionate, informed care that will benefit generations to come.
