Want to make your own weighted demo doll? Here’s a fun step-by-step guide:
- Gather your supplies: Pick a doll or stuffed animal that’s about the same size as a newborn, and grab some materials to add weight, like rice, beans, or small pellets. You'll also need a sewing kit and other supplies to secure the weights. We love JC Dolls because they’re affordable, come in a good size, and offer different ethnicities. You might even find one second-hand or locally instead of using Amazon.
- Decide on your target weight: Aim for a realistic feel, but remember that live babies hold some of their own weight. Your demo doll should be about a half to a full pound lighter. For instance, if you’re aiming for a 7 lb baby, your demo doll should weigh around 6.5 lbs. A kitchen scale works great for checking weight.
- Secure the weight: Remove some stuffing and sew small pouches filled with weight into the doll. Or, use Velcro or other fasteners. Pocket-style cloth diapers are a handy way to add weight to the doll's bum. Make sure the weight is evenly distributed, with some in the head (but not too much) to keep it feeling natural.
- Test it out: Try wearing your new weighted doll in various carriers or ask others for feedback. Adjust the weight and placement as needed until it feels realistic and comfortable.
- Put it to work: Use your custom demo doll to show different carrying positions during consultations. It’s a fantastic way to give clients a feel for what carrying a real baby is like and help them choose the right carrier.
Enjoy creating your demo doll and have fun experimenting with it!
